The ordinary done pretty: Straws

I found these heart-shaped drinking straws online, and kind of loved them.
The only thing is, i'm not really into heart-shaped things that much. So i went on a little online quest to see if somebody already had come up with the brilliant idea of making triangular straws.

Turns out nobody has yet.
(and i'm totally claiming the idea).

What a lot of people did come up with though, is the idea of reinventing the paper straw.

I'm totally loving these:

They're by Beve!, a small business based in Virginia, that's operated by designer Lauren Boggs Meslar.
Her paper straws are available in stores all over the US, and -luckily for us non-USsians- online via her Etsy Store. (check out the birch ones!)

On a side note: Today T and i (and X of course) might be house hunting for the last time... More news soon!

Familiar Alien: Glass Farm by MVRDV

My inner jury is still out on this one:

Obviously it's a mighty interesting building.
A strong image. MVRDV-worthy.
And a perfect mixture of the historic / familiar with the contemporary / alien.
It's massive, yet at the same time it's kind of etherial.
It's there, but it's not there.

At least if you go by the photographs...
I'm sure the building is very much there when you're on the square of Schijndel, the small village in the south of the Netherlands where it was build.
Coming from an even smaller village in that same part of the country, i'm not sure if i would be happy with a building this massive and modern in its centre.
(i know, i sound like one of those old townspeople who want to keep all things as they are, forever)

I guess i'll have to go see this Glass Farm with my own eyes to make up my mind.
Since undertakings like that are best planned when the sun is out, it might be a while before i'll be able to share my final verdict.

The lowly are strong - Laura Normandin

At one of my Pinterest-browsing tours i came across these beautifully painted-on bottles:

A little on-line research led me to Laura Normandin.
On her website I found a few other projects.
There's something about the colors, about the way Laura draws her 'symbols'. Her work just appeals to me, big time.

The Mercy Seat - cutouts with found materials - 2002

Man of Sorrows - inkjet print - 2003

An Anthology of internal exploits and external joys - Hand-bound book of treated Japanese paper - 2003

I also found this Artist statement:
What i didn't find, however, was any sign of the bottles, or of more recent projects.
Curious about what it would cost me to get myself one of those bottles, i visited Laura's Etsy store, but at this moment the shop (Wren Handmade) doesn't appear to have anything on it.
Also, her last blog entry was from September last year.

This absence on the web made me wonder, so i decided to send her an e-mail to see if she is alright and what she's up to nowadays.
Unfortunately she hasn't replied (yet?), which means her on-line absence will remain a mystery for now.
I still wanted to show her work, 'cause i just really like it. Hope she doesn't mind.

If there's anyone out there who can tell me more about Laura, please get in touch.

Empty spaces

T and I still haven't solved the house problem, but I'm sure it will work out one way or another.
We're doing all we can. Something will work.
It will.
Eventually.

Meanwhile, I'm dreaming about bright empty spaces...

If i'd have a say in the matter, obviously i would choose to stay put right now.
(I don't think anyone would choose to move within four months of the birth of their first child.)
But there's nothing we can do.
It's final: We have to be out of this house by March 27th.

And well...
Since it's inevitable, i'm starting to look forward to moving.
(As long as we can move someplace we can stay, that is.)
I'm very ready for a new empty space to make my own.
It will probably not be nearly as pretty as the above photographs, but eventually it will be home.

I'm looking forward to home.
